The NSCA-Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) Exam offered by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Certification Commission qualifies successful candidates as NSCA-Certified Personal Trainers (CPT).
The NSCA-CPT Exam examines a candidate’s understanding of core skills and knowledge required to work one-on-one with clients in a health club or personal business setting. The exam covers everything a professional would need to assist clients with specialized cardiovascular, orthopedic or other chronic conditions on an exercise and conditioning regime.
NSCA requires that candidates have CPR training in order to sit for the exam. The candidate must also have current AED certification and be 18 years of age. NSCA certification will only accept CPR and AED certification obtained from a hands-on training component and skills performance evaluation. Any training certification program that does not use those two things will not be considered valid by NSCA standards.
The NSCA-CPT is offered several times each week all over the country. The initial fee for the NSCA-CPT computer-based exam is $285, with a $235 retake fee for members of NSCA. Non-members pay $420 for their initial registration and $370 for any retake. The paper and pencil exam is $15 cheaper than the member and non-member computer-based fees.
Currently the NSCA-CPT exams are administered through AMP Assessment Centers, which are mostly located in H&R Block locations. There are over 160 different testing sites in the continental US. Candidates can likely take an exam anytime during the week, with occasional test dates available on Saturdays.
Candidates can expect the NSCA-CPT exam to cover the following domains: client consultation, program planning, and techniques in exercise, safety, emergency procedures, and legal issues.
