Nurse Executive Study Guide

The Nurse Executive Exam offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) qualifies candidates as nurse executives through a regular exam or advanced version.

Candidates who wish to sit for the Nurse Executive Exam must first meet the ANCC eligibility requirements.

* A valid RN license issued from the US or Canada is required.
* Candidate should have a bachelor’s degree in nursing or better.
* Candidate should have held a nurse executive position, a faculty position, or a nurse management position for two years within the past five.
* Candidates need to have 30 hours of continuing education within nursing administration field within the past three years.

Candidates can apply online or via the internet. The application process will be reviewed by an ANCC board. Once accepted the candidate will receive information on how to schedule the exam at a computer-based testing center. The test sites are located throughout the US, providing a convenient means to administer the exam.

The exam fee runs $390 for non-members and $270 for ANCC members. The certification is good for five years, after which time the candidate must recertify by paying the $350 or $200 fee respectively.
The Nurse Executive exam consists of 175 multiple choice questions. Only 150 of the questions are used to determine the grade; the other 25 are used to develop further tests in the future. Candidates should be well versed in the following topics:

* Legal, Regulatory, and Ethical Issues
* Healthcare Economics
* Healthcare Environment
* Professional Practice
