The NLN Pre-Admission Examination (PAX) for Registered Nursing (RN) and Practical/Vocational Nursing (PN/VN or LPN/LVN) offered by the National League for Nursing (NLN) examines a candidate’s skill set and knowledge for entrance into nursing programs nationwide. Candidates are tested in three key areas, including verbal skills, math, and science.
The NLN PAX is open to any student who believes they have the requisite knowledge to attend nursing school. Most nursing programs offer the PAX before any talk of acceptance can be discussed. Candidates are expected to come prepared or risk waiting an additional semester to take the exam again. Candidates will need to pay the exam fee upfront before being admitted for the test.
Students are expected to bring two forms of ID (one photo), exam confirmation slip, and pencils. Exam confirmation slips can be printed online through the NLN website. Without all of these things, the test center may not accept you for the exam.
Candidates will be expected to be knowledgeable in the key areas we mentioned. The verbal skills portion of the exam covers vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. Candidates will be asked multiple-choice questions, some in relation to a reading passage. The reading level is common to college level text books. The math portion of the exam covers the fundamentals of math, word problems, and does touch on some algebra and geometry. Candidates will be expected to be knowledgeable about graphs, conversions, fractions, and applied mathematics. The science portion will test a candidates understanding of biology, chemistry, and health.
