Phlebotomy Study Guide

Those who wish to sit for the Phlebotomy Certification Exam must first meet the eligibility requirements. They must have either a high school diploma or an equivalent diploma (GED) and have successfully completed an NHA approve training program. The candidate would also be eligible with a diploma and one year of experience in the field.

A CPT typically draws blood from patients or donors in a clinical setting. The duties performed include assembling equipment and proper disposal of needles, as well as other hazardous materials, testing of drug levels in patients, examining of abnormal blood cells in a patient, and performance of many chemical and biological, microscopic tests.

The CPT Exam costs $105 and is available as an online test or via paper and pencil. Some schools that offer a CPT training program include the test cost in their tuition fees.

Candidates will be asked 125 multiple-choice questions pertaining to their knowledge of a CPT. They may be asked questions pertaining to:

* Their role as a phlebotomist
* Professional ethics
* Healthcare settings, equipment use, laboratory procedures
* Skin puncture and blood drawing methods
* OSHA and infection control
* Phlebotomy procedures
* Complications
* Basic anatomy
* Medical terminology

The NHA requires recertification every two years, as the phlebotomist field constantly changes. Those who wish to recertify must submit evidence of at least 10 continuing education credits during the two year time frame. Without the credits, a certification will be lost.
