The Project Management Institute (PMI) gives the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam as a certification in the field of project management.
Aside from PMP, PMI offers these other certifications:
- Program Management Professional (PgMP)
- Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)
- PMI Scheduling Professional credential (PMI-SP)SM
- PMI Risk Management Professional (PMI-RMP)SM
PMI bases the PMP exam on the PMP Examination Specification that it published in 2005. Most of the questions on the exam can be found on PMI’s ANSI standard A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide).
The exam for PMP is composed of multiple-choice questions that the examinee can take using a computer or conventional pen and paper.
You must pay $400 for the exam.
The exam has 200 questions, 25 of which serve as trial questions that will not be counted on the final score.
The examinee will not know which items are trial questions.
The exam must be finished within 4 hours.
To pass the test, you must have at least 106 right answers out of the 175 questions, or 60.5%.
Aside from passing the exam, you must meet the following criteria to be eligible for PMP certification:
- You must have at least a high school diploma.
- You must have a record that shows you have worked for 7,500 hours as a Project Manager for a period of 60 months over the past 8 years.
- If you are a bachelor’s degree holder, you are only required 4,500 hours or 36 months practice in the field.
