Before being able to take the PNEE, a candidate must first meet the eligibility requirements.

* Candidate must have a working knowledge of computers.
* Candidate cannot have taken the non-nursing and non-clinical nursing courses more than three times.

The exam can be offered two ways, at computer-based testing sites or via pencil and paper. The exam is typically administered on the school’s campus in their testing facilities. Most facilities offer the test four times a year, in each season. The test times may vary from school to school, so it is advised to check ahead with the institution.

The PNEE consists of multiple choice questions focuses on English, basic math, and reading skills. The English portion of the exam covers syntax, grammar, spelling, and sentence construction. Some vocabulary questions may also appear. The math portion of the exam covers fundamentals, problem solving, fractions, equations, decimals, metric conversion, and number problems. The reading portion showcases a few key reading passages and the candidate must answer questions related to what they read. These questions are often inference or conclusion based questions.

Each of the three scores carries a grade. As mentioned, the overall grade must be 20 or better and students must achieve at least a 22 in the math portion to succeed in being admitted.
