The Praxis Exam is among the series of tests that is being given to teachers by the Educational Testing Service. The teachers must pass the exam to be given certification, allowing them to teach in most states in the United States.
Praxis I or the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) covers the following areas:
- Reading
- Writing
- Mathematics
This will not tackle the subjects that you learned in college. This is merely to evaluate your basic knowledge and general academic skills. The test is composed of multiple-choice questions and an essay.
The examinee can take either a written or computer-based Praxis exam.
You can sign up online for the written exam. It is a little shorter than the computer-based format because it contains fewer questions. You will be given 1 hour to answer each section. You will be guided by a proctor or a moderator during the course of the exam.
If you prefer the computer-based exam, you have to set an appointment through phone on a Prometric test site. The advantage is that you can set a date even if you are on a rush. You may also cancel your appointment and have the exam rescheduled easily, if it happens that you would not be able to take the exam on the set date.
With the computer-based exam, you will be able to simultaneously take all areas of the exams, which are timed separately. Each section for this format will last 1 hour and 15 minutes.
