Private Investigator Exam

In the United States, 42 states and the District of Columbia require private investigators to take the Private Investigator (PI) exam. This aims to keep the best people in the industry and get rid of those who are unqualified.

To qualify for a license, you must go through the following steps:

• Submit the written applications for class A, B and C licenses to the director. This must be done under oath.
• The director will forward the application to the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation.
• If your application is approved, you can then proceed to taking the exam.
• You can register at the test center on the day of the exam itself.

The exam consists of multiple choice questions and covers the following areas:

• License law
• Penal and criminal procedure law
• Investigative techniques
• Supervision
• Restrictions
• Interpreting written material
• Report writing

On the day of the exam, you should bring the following:

• Any government-issued ID with picture, which can be:
  • driver’s license
  • military ID
  • state-issued ID
  • US INS-issued ID
  • certificate of US citizenship
• Examination fee

Make sure that you don’t overlook anything so that you will not cram on the date of your examination.

You are allotted 2.5 hours to finish the test. To pass the exam, you must answer at least 70% of the questions right. The results will not be in numerical data. It will just state whether you passed or you failed. Notifications will be sent through mail.
