The British Columbia Provincial Examination offered by the British Columbia Ministry of Education examines the academic abilities of 10, 11, and 12th grade students in British Columbia schools. The exams are mandatory for all students attending public schools in this class range.
The exam focuses primarily on math and English skills, but also has a Science portion for the 10th grade component. The 11th grade one focuses on Civic studies, Social Sciences, and BC First Nations Studies. The final exam, the 12th grade one, focuses on the majority of subjects a student will have experience with at graduation, like Biology, Math, Science, Chemistry, English, Geography, French, Physics, and a few others.
Many of the provincial exams are delivered and taken at computers. Students are asked a series of multiple choice questions on screen and their answers are recorded for later grading and analysis. The tests can help schools, administrators, teachers, and parents to help each student perform better in the future. The test results are confidential and only used as an assessment and curriculum tailoring tool.
The provincial exams are delivered during school hours, typically beginning in morning sessions and ending by lunch or late afternoon. A student will not be asked to test more than they will be capable of doing.
The tests are typically given in October, November, April, May, and August. All of these months only offer electronic exams. Pencil and paper exams can be specially ordered for students who have a particular need.
