SOL Study Guide Review

The Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) Test offered by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) assesses student aptitude in a number of studies. The SOL Exams cover math, science, English, history, and computer technology.

Students will be given the SOL test at the closure of the regular school semester. The test allows school directors and educators to accurately assess the student body’s aptitude on various subjects. The standards set forth by the state determine the course of the following year’s learning programs.

In English, students take the SOL from kindergarten all the way up through their senior year of high school. Students in the senior module must formulate oral arguments, read and analyze literature and its many forms, develop an expository essay, and research a well document paper. The four high school SOL English exams have four separate levels, each defining the standards in different ways. With each proficiency level, students have gained a further, deeper understanding of the subject.

The Math SOL looks at a student’s mathematical reasoning, connections, and representations throughout the course of their elementary to high school careers. At different grades, students will be asked to answer various functions, algebra, geometry, basic math, and computation questions.

The SOL test is mandatory for students in the Virginia Public School system. At the conclusion of the year, the tests are administered and reviewed prior to following year’s beginning. The tests measure the student understanding of a particular subject, and allow school officials to steer their education programs with all the data they collect.
