SPEX Study Guide Review

The Special Purpose Examination (SPEX) offered by the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) to assess a medical physician’s understanding of key medical requisites required to properly practice medicine.
The SPEX exam is only available to medically licensed physicians who need to secure re-licensing, prove to an institution or licensing agency that they have kept up on medicinal education, or to be re-instated after a period of medical practice inactivity.

The SPEX can only be taken at the request of a state licensing board for individual candidates. The candidates must have held a license in the US or Canada previously or currently. Self nominated candidates are accepted for those who wish to take the test for their own purposes. If a self nominated person takes the exam, they are the only ones who receive the score. Candidates should submit a copy of their license with their application and a signed explanation from the licensing board as to the reason for the exam.
The SPEX can be taken at computer-based testing centers found throughout the US. The test consists of 400 multiple choice questions, broken into 8 different sections. Candidates will be allotted 52 minutes to complete one section. Candidates will be at the testing center for approximately 8 hours to complete the exam. Thomson Prometric testing centers administer the exam.

The SPEX costs $1,200 for each test. If for any reason the test is cancelled, $396.00 will not be refunded. The application process can take anywhere from two to four weeks to complete. Once completed, the candidate will receive information on how to schedule the test at a Prometric testing center.
