TACHS Study Guide

The Test for Admission into Catholic High Schools (TACHS) offered by the Riverside Publishing and the Archdiocese of New York, and the Diocese of Brooklyn, gauges a student’s preparedness for entry into a Catholic private school.

Even children who grow up in the Catholic school system have to take this exam. It’s a standardized test that regulates the amount of knowledge in key areas a student must have acquired before entering a Catholic High School. The test focuses on boilerplate studies, like mathematics, language, reading, and comprehension. Students will also be tested on their general reasoning.

All students are required to fill out an application to register for the TACHS exam. The application can be done over the Internet, phone, or on paper and submitted to the Archdiocese. An applicant’s school records are required for the test application to be granted. Students need to show they have completed all studies and are ready to enter high school unencumbered. On the Admit Card, students write their three choices for Catholic High Schools. Parents need to sign the card as well, so as to verify the choices.

The test is schedule by the Archdiocese of New York or the Diocese of Brooklyn/Queens. The time of each student’s test will depend on which Archdiocese territory they fall into. Students can expect to arrive on the test site at 8:15am to prepare for the 9:00am test time. The test stretches to noon, with time for breaks and instructions between modules. The actual test takes two hours to take. Students are required to bring two number two pencils to the exam site.
