The Texas Academic Skills Program (TASP) offered by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) assesses student’s current understanding of key subjects. The skills tests are administered inside Texas public school systems to gauge a student’s learning, level of understanding, and assess the school’s individual achievement for the whole student body.
Students who are nearing graduation will be given the TASP exam to determine their public school taught them to a point where they have college level understanding in reading, math, and writing. The TASP exam has been in place since the late 1980s. Many higher level education institutions in Texas require the TASP test to be administered before allowing entry. It’s a requirement for the application process. Any student that plans on attending college level courses must take the exam in order to determine they are fit to take the college level class.
College students must take the exam before earning nine credit hours. The exam is offered five times a year throughout Texas. There are several locations and some institutions offer the exam as well. The exams are typically under fifty multiple choice questions on any of the three subjects. A student must pass in order to attend college level courses in Texas.
The reading exam contains sections of 300 to 750 words where the student needs to read and answer questions related to the passage. The mathematics exam features questions about fundamentals, algebra, geometry, and basic problem solving. The writing portion contains sample sections, where students are encouraged to write 300-600 words on a given topic or question.
