Teacher Certification Test Study Guide

The Teacher Certification Test offered by many state institutions throughout the country assesses applicants understanding of key subject matter like English, Math, and Science.

Most teacher certification tests are offered by each State’s Board of Education. Applicants can take the test at a number of locations including computer-based testing sites or even through the mail on a paper exam. Registration takes place online, through the mail, or via a phone call.

Test fees vary from state to state. For example, Illinois’ certification testing system charges $60 for the basic skills test plus an additional $26 for a registration processing fee. In Illinois, to take the exam at a computer-based testing site applicants also pay an $84 fee. Applicants are expected to pay the full registration fee prior to the sitting for the exam.

Each State’s Board of Education offers basic skills tests to determine an applicant’s eligibility in regards to teaching within the state. The basic skills test includes college-level text in the areas of physical and life sciences, humanities and fine arts, and the social and behavioral sciences. The majority of the questions we’ll be answered as a multiple-choice format. Typically applicants are given three hours to take each exam that they apply for.

Applicants will be expected to use critical reasoning skills and prior understanding in order to complete the exam with a passing grade. The teacher certification tests are offered any time throughout the year at a number of locations found in the US.
