TOEFL Study Guide

A registered trademark of the Educational Testing Service (ETS), the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is administered worldwide. TOEFL aims to assess the ability of the examinee to understand and properly use the English language. This pertains to Standard American English. Introduced in 1964, TOEFL has been taken by almost 20 million students.

The exam results are valid for 2 years and can be used by non-native applicants when applying to colleges and universities that are English-speaking. Some government agencies, scholarship programs, and businesses also require TOEFL for assessment of applicants. After 2 years, the scores are removed from the official database.

There are 3 ways to take the exam: paper-based test (PBT), computer-based test (CBT), and Internet-based test (iBT). Among them, iBT is now the most popular choice

The exam is 4 hours long. It consists of the following sections:

1. Reading (39 questions)
* There are 3 to 5 long passages about academic topics.
* The topics are usually found in undergraduate university textbooks.
* Students must comprehend the main ideas.
* Types of questions include vocabulary, inferences, paraphrasing, completing summaries, and filling out tables.

2. Listening (34 questions)
* There are 6 long passages, 2 are about student conversations and 4 are academic discussions.
* Students must determine the overall organization, details, inferences, stance, function, and main ideas.

3. Speaking (6 questions)
* There are 6 tasks, 2 independent and 4 integrated tasks.

4. Writing (2 questions)
* There are 2 tasks, 1 integrated and 1 independent task.
