TOEIC Study Guide

The Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) Exam offered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) assesses a candidates understanding of English language for International business settings as well as Universities and Colleges.

The TOEIC offers two versions, one called Speaking and Writing, which is used for international business situations, and Listening and Reading, which is used for University and College acceptance. Each exam has its own unique questions and format.

Since most global companies have offices worldwide, the TOEIC Speaking and Writing exam specializes in assessing a candidate’s ability to communicate in the English language. The test is available at many testing centers across the world. Both tests can be taken as pencil and paper exams.

The listening portion of the exam has students actively listen to conversations spoken in the English language. There are four parts to this portion of the exam, and candidates will be asked to answer a series of 100 multiple choice questions related to the passages. During the reading section, candidates will be asked to answer 100 questions based upon passages printed out on the screen or page. The listening portion allots close to 3 hours for test time and the reading portion a total of 75 minutes.

The Speaking and Writing test measures a candidate’s understanding of English as its used in everyday life. The speaking portion of the test takes about 20 minutes. The test features sections that focus on pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and overall comprehension. The writing portion of the test takes close to an hour to complete. The candidate will be asked to write a sentence, a response to a request, and a short opinion essay.
