The Virginia Reading Assessment (VRA) Exam offered by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) and National Evaluation Systems (NES) assesses a teacher’s proficiency in teaching reading in public schools. The test focuses on five elements, including phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. The test is geared towards pre-middle school teachers, reading specialists, and special education teachers.
The VRA for elementary and special education teachers measures the teachers understanding of the five key areas identified earlier. The test is 90 multiple choice questions and has 4 constructed answer response style questions. The reading specialist test is similar but only has 2 constructed answer response style questions.
The VRA costs $30 to register for the paper based test and $50 for the computer based test. The VRA for Reading Specialists costs $75. Candidates who register late for the exam will be charged an additional $30.
The VRA Exam can be taken many times throughout the year, at computer based testing sites throughout the US. Applicants can register online or through US Postal mail. When registering, candidates will be asked a series of background questions that will remain confidential. These questions help create the exams. The exam fees are due at time of registration.
The CBT test sites require all test candidates to arrive at least a half hour early. Those who run late may not be admitted. Candidates can receive test scores online as soon as ten days after completing the exam. Scores are reported to the individual, the institution the applicant requested at the time of registration, and the Virginia Department of Education.
