WBST/WPT Study Guide

The Wonderlic Basic Skills Test (WBST) or Personnel Test (WPT) is used to assess adults who are vying for entry-level jobs. This exam attempts to measure one’s skill level and cognitive capabilities to predict future performance. It shows your employer how you will be able to use your verbal and math skills on the job that you are applying for. The exam can be completed within a short period of time.

The WBST is also used as a psychological instrument. The US labor department pronounced that there are 6 job levels for the various levels of WBST. In this exam, it is not the amount of time that you spend in answering the questions that matters. You must focus on answering the questions correctly.

The WBST is focused on these 2 areas:

1. Verbal skills (50 questions)
* Following simple instructions
* Test of comprehension
* Finding solutions to problems through the given information
* Sentence completion
* Vocabulary
* Subject and verb agreement
* Compound and complex sentences
* Analyzing diagrams and charts

2. Mathematical skills (45 questions)
* Applying basic mathematical functions (addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication) to fractions, decimals, and whole numbers
* Applying the functions on fractional or whole monetary units
* Measurement units including width, distance, time, length, and weight
* Knowledge about percentage and ratio
* Basic skills in algebra
* Basic concepts in geometry
