The Washington Educator Skills Test – Basic (WEST-B) is given to all who apply for entrance to preparation programs as state-approved teachers. This must also be taken by people from other states who apply for a Washington residency teaching certificate.
The exam is objective-based and criterion-referenced. The latter is designed to assess one’s skills and knowledge in relation to the conventional standard. This aims to determine the people fit to perform well in educator preparation programs and as public school teachers in classrooms.
The questions on the test are based on the relevant and current expectations for teachers and student teachers in Washington. This will mainly focus on one’s comprehension of the fundamental skills.
The Professional Educator Standards Board sets the passing score for WEST-B. They base it on the recommendations of educators in the state of Washington.
WEST-B has these 3 different subtests that are composed of multiple choice questions:
1. Reading (60 questions)
2. Mathematics (60 questions)
3. Writing (50 questions and 2 writing prompts)
You can take as many subtests as you can in one test administration. But in order to pass, you must get good marks in all 3 subtests. WEST-B is given 6 times a year at selected areas within the state of Washington. You must take note of the fees, policies, registration procedures, dates, and sites that can be found at the WEST-B Registration Bulletin.
